Mare Island

Mare Island is the location of the Port Chicago protest where, on August 9, 1944, 258 sailors raised objections when tasked with loading explosive munitions under conditions that failed to meet federally-mandated Naval safety regulations. This event was instrumental in the desegregation of the Navy in February 1946; a pivotal step in our nation's ongoing struggle for civil rights.

Mare Island Museum, part of Mare Island Historic Park Foundation, is currently closed until further notice. Fortunately, the Park Foundation still offers guided walking tours through 142 years of Naval Shipyard history. Advanced registration is required.
