At the 2023 NAACP National Convention, the NAACP unanimously passed a national directive calling for the Secretary of the Navy to exonerate the African American World War II sailors known as the Port Chicago 50.

The national resolution follows the lead of the San Francisco Bay Area branches East County NAACP and Richmond California NAACP, who both passed resolutions supporting exoneration late last year.

This national resolution is not the first time the NAACP has supported justice for the sailors of Port Chicago, as previous national resolutions were passed in 2016 and 1999.
